Behold the Power of SALT!
Salt is essential for maintaining hydration and balance of all kinds within the body. It has an impact on your overall cardiovascular health, blood pressure, sleep and even for your immune system.
Does the type of salt matter? Short answer: YES! Is there an easy and tasty DIY alternative to store bought sports or electrolyte drinks? Again, YES! Let’s get into it:

Key notes
Benefits of Salt.
Poor ‘ol salt has been demonized for years as a cause of many health issues when recent research suggests that it in fact is the cure to many ailments. Salt helps the process of hydration that is vital to our bodies function. It also aids in digestion by producing healthy gut flora to help in the breakdown of food and in the absorption of nutrients from the foods we eat.
Another benefit of salt is the aid in the balancing of blood pressure with help of the potassium in it. High blood pressure has been blamed on salt for many years. However, upon further investigation of the study used to fuel this salt witch hunt, was based on rats that were eating 80 times the amount of salt in the average human being would consume under normal conditions. The rats were exposed to a very large excess amount of salt, so in short there aren’t any definitive parallels that could be accurately drawn from the consumption of salt and high blood pressure. Although this hasn’t stopped this theory and study from being used for years. So, unless you’re planning on eating 80 times more salt than normal, upping your unrefined salt intake a bit should reward you with many health benefits. Of course, talk to our healthcare provider if you have concerns about this.
Are you looking to detox? look no further than your pantry for some unrefined salt. Salt can promote healthy sweating and also gives your kidneys the support they need to filter out toxins from your body through urine (if you have kidney issues of course you should consult your physician prior to increasing your salt intake.)

Types of Salt
Which type of salt you use can make or break your salt experience. For instance, if you are using common table salt or iodized salt, you are dealing with a highly processed salt that could be coming across bleaching and being treated with other chemicals stripping the salt of all its natural nutrients as well as sometimes even added sugar in the processing of it. So, say YES to unrefined sea salt. Use Himalayan Sea Salt, or our family favorite; Redmonds Sea Salt and you will be benefiting from 80 trace elements naturally fortified in it like potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc and iron to name a few.

Sole water, your tasty electrolyte drink alternative
Can you make a tasty salt water drink? YES!! Introducing: Sole water! Sole water has amazing benefits that seem never-ending: Hydration, improved sleep, enhanced digestive health, lowered blood pressure, alleviation of muscle cramps, balancing hormones and balancing blood pressure, just to name a few. Using unrefined sea salt in your DIY electrolyte drink will also give your body 80 or so trace minerals that our bodies need and aren’t always easy to get in the everyday Western diet.
Making Sole Water is super easy. It requires just two ingredients and a mason jar with a plastic lid, as the salt will rust a metal one. Use a plastic spoon or scoop the sole water as well. To make Sole Water, fill the mason jar 1/4 of the way full of unrefined salt, then add filtered water, close the lid on tight and shake it all up and wait for it to settle… That’s it!! It really is that simple. As soon as the salt has settled (sometimes it can take overnight) at the bottom you will know that your water has absorbed as much of the salt as it is able to because there will still be some salt settled at the bottom of your mason jar. This is when you know your Sole Water recipe is complete! If there is no salt at the bottom of your jar, simply add more salt, shake and wait for it to settle again. Now you have a homemade mineral packed power punch to ward off dehydration while giving your body 80 minerals it has been missing.
To make a drink with your Sole water, simply take a plastic spoon to measure about a teaspoon size amount of your settled Sole water and put it in a glass and add filtered water and you’re set! For flavor, I add half a lemon squeeze and some honey to mine for some added health benefits. When I am making an alternative to juice, or sports drinks. I will add some dye free fruit flavor which really masks the salt taste. My kids LOVE this tasty drink. So, get ready to boost hydration while detoxing your body and also giving it vital trace minerals along the way. You can store Sole water in your fridge or countertop if you want as the salt has natural preservation qualities that will keep it from going bad.
Let me know in the comments below if you have any variations of Sole Water or if you have any questions. Happy salting!
